Successfully navigating work, school, and life relies on the use of
a number of important skills. These skills are fundamental to completing
many everyday tasks. Low skill levels or missing knowledge in these
foundational skill areas can affect learning and the ability to
effectively perform workplace tasks. The ability to recognize and
understand words, symbols, and images (Reading), the ability to
understand and use numerical information (Numeracy), and the ability
to be flexible and adjust to changes (Adaptability) are required skills
in many occupational and learning environments. It is important to
identify and address gaps in these skills so they do not get in the
way of reaching learning and occupational goals.
The Essential Skills for Success Assessment (ESSA) measures reading
and a variety of foundational numeracy skills to provide information
on both overall competency and areas where skills gaps are observed.
Adaptability levels are also estimated based on self-reported behaviours
and skills.
